Elizabeth May on Global Warming

Constantine Kritsonis asks: Why aren't politicians demanding we brace for impact to mitigate the devastation of global warming? I think it is because any established political party that does so now will be at once admitting they have been asleep for ages. They will be admitting global warming is more serious than the oligarchs that control the messaging pretended

THE BIGGEST BARRIER TO CLIMATE ACTION IN CANADA: THE OIL AND GAS LOBBY

This report documents the ways in which Canada’s oil and gas lobby has undermined federal efforts to address climate change. Emissions from the oil and gas sector have been growing – both per barrel and over all – for three decades, and lobbying by industry has derailed significant pieces of federal climate legislation. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers has published a wish list for Election 2019. This research report reveals that if granted, GHG emissions from the oil and gas sector would use 60 per cent of Canada’s entire 2030 carbon budget under the Paris Agreement.

UN report on global warming carries life-or-death warning

Preventing an extra single degree of heat could make a life-or-death difference in the next few decades for multitudes of people and ecosystems on this fast-warming planet, an international panel of scientists reported Sunday. But they provide little hope the world will rise to the challenge.

The Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued its gloomy report at a meeting in Incheon, South Korea...

The Blob

A new marine heat wave spreading across a portion of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of British Columbia has so far grown into one of the largest of its kind in the last four decades, officials say, second only to the infamous "blob" that disrupted marine life five years ago...

FOSSIL FUELS

Research project maps most powerful players in the fossil fuel industry

Conservative parties attack green tech to enrich fossil fuel shareholders

GM and Volkswagen (VW) will no longer manufacture hybrid cars for the US market, according to the Wall Street Journal. The automotive giants will instead invest in manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) while they continue to produce gasoline vehicles to meet the bulk of near-term demand in the US.

How does the conservative government in Ontario respond?

Andrew Scheer's  buddy and premier of Ontario Rob Ford  has removed EV chargers from GO stations and eliminated EV charging requirements from the Ontario Building Code.

One of Ford’s first acts as Premier was to cancel EV rebates.

Over the next 5 years, the global auto industry is spending a whopping $255 billion to develop electric vehicles.

Auto makers are planning to release 200 new EV models by 2023, with companies like Toyota pledging to make all its vehicles emissions-free by 2050.

Ford’s anti-EV strategy is proof positive that the conservative mindset is to feed their fossil fuel shareholder friends more profits by attacking renewable energy competition wherever possible. It is their history, from destroying the first electric vehicles over the screams of protesters at the scrap yard who wanted to pay cash for the new EVs, to destroying public rail lines in violation of the law and barring renewables from competing in government tenders for power purchase agreements. The fix was in - and still is in Ontario.

In the war against global warming, conservatives are the enemy. The Green Party of Canada has since inception in 1983 been calling for a hard acceleration toward EVs and all clean green technologies that cost effectively replace fossil fuels everywhere.

TAR SANDS

From farm to fridge? Making cling wrap from canola straw

image43

Solutions and problems with the tar sands must both be presented at once to maximize effectiveness

Under the spastic first past the post electoral system that no one alive today had any say whatsoever in putting into place, a system that routinely gives 100% of the power in the House of Commons to political parties that 60% of the electorate voted against, the tar sands have become the high ground in a battle for the oil vote, a vote that would have less influence under a progressive electoral system.

The fossil fuel lobby in Canada has infected the halls of power, including regulators and major political parties with their corporate cronies.

See: https://www.macleans.ca/opinion/is-there-a-deep-state-in-albertas-oil-industry/

The lobby has even succeeded in getting a former oil company employee elected as Prime Minister. This in order for their oilco torpedo of a PM to steal taxpayers money and give billions of dollars a year in corporate welfare to super rich shareholders of tar sands companies, to fund their climate change denial propaganda, to allow massive lakes of carcinogenic tar sands waste so huge that can be seen from space, while at once paying dirt cheap royalty rates - and leaving cleanup costs of hundreds of billions to the tax payer. Now with tar sands pipes running beside and endangering the Great Lakes, the source of fresh water for a huge biodiversity and many millions of people running right underneath the city of Toronto, with hundreds of millions of people facing 122°F temperatures, with heat melting roads in Europe, what does Justin do while the world is literally being turned into Dante's Inferno?

Justin Trudeau's response ( loved by Andrew Scheer) is forcing B.C. to play Russian roulette with his pipeline gun.

Make no mistake, these types of actions here and globally that collectively destroy millions of species while killing and sickening all of humanity are by definition a form of organized crime, designed and maintained by oligarchs who care more about maintaining their money and power than they do for the biosphere. It's time for all progressives to fight back!

It is critical to not only criticize the tar sands, but to simultaneously present new ideas to replace the tar sands jobs - to present a vision of the future.

Such ideas include sustainable industries such as growing multipurpose hemp and organic vegetables with biochar infused soil. The ideas include using new Canadian technology (proven by Carbon Engineering Corp) that cost-effectively creates carbon neutral fuels for internal combustion engines and jets by removing carbon from the air.

See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHX9pmQ6m_s

The IPCC has stated removing carbon from the air must be part of the global solution, so let's get Alberta making fuels by removing carbon from the air instead of adding to it. Let's get the re-education plan and income support (dovetailed with the GPC's Guaranteed Annual Income policy) for oil workers in a managed transition to sustainable industry for Alberta. In the push for sustainability, it is always critical for greens to consider the experience of those whose jobs will be redundant in the new green paradigm if we want to actualize that paradigm faster.

Let's use abandoned oil wells as job creating sources of geothermal energy for residences, industry and next-generation greenhouses that can supply non-GMO, pesticide free food locally.

The transition to sustainability for Alberta and indeed all of Canada can be bolstered by green money creation. This from our central bank as per GPC policy of returning the Bank of Canada to a prominent role in the creation of money - because there is no better purpose for that newly created money than saving our planet by creating green jobs.

Green crown corporations can be created by the Bank of Canada and owned by Canada as part of the drive for a sustainable Canada.

So let's support the Green Marshall Plan policy see: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1111509175543715/?ref=bookmarks
